New Cans

Well, I've had my Meier Audio Corda 3move for a few days now and i've noticed a DEFINITE improvement over my sound card which is a plus.

I've also just received my AKG K701's and well.. they're sweeeet. Very detailed, very nice even through my 3move. I'm now planning on buildling a "Starving Student Hybrid" amp which will HOPEFULLY be able to drive the headphones better, however i'll still need a source, so... we'll see what happens in that department, might try find a DIY DAC kit :P

Anyways, time for burn in, 30 minutes down.. 299.5 hours to go :(
I'll probably start listening from the 100hr mark :p

Musical Paragon

PS. For a slightly more in-depth review of both headphones, scroll to bottom of this post.

Today, I listened to the most amazing thing i've heard (so far :p) in my life.

NAD M5 ($4000 CD Player) + Some I-Cant-Remember-Headphone-Amp $250 + AKG K701 ($900 Headphones)

Ps. prices are quoted NZD within NZ (You can get them for 2/3rds the price shipped from overseas)

Well anyways, I was comparing the AKG K701 to the Sennheiser HD650 (I was aiming at the HD600's but they didn't have stock). Seriously, I have never heard instruments feel/sound so alive, this is compared to what I currently own, Sennheiser HD555 with no good audio sources. I really cannot describe how amazing they sounded, compared to what i've seen online... Holy crap!! I really wonder how that sounds.

Okay so I was standing there, listening to some Jazz, my lord it sounded beautiful, the doublebass was so defined and the lower register of the piano just sounded so sharp and beautiful!! I hope my eventual setup sounds as good as what I heard there (will be many years down the line).

!!! Expensive obsession much? :(

Headphone Review
Okay, i consider myself a "basshead" where i love deep rich bass that makes my headphones vibrate a little but... From all the reviews you've probably read of "oh gosh AKG K701 vs Sennheiser HD650 / HD600", i have to disagree with most of them. I didn't quite hear anything else other than jazz on them but it was a seriously good listen. I only had about 20~30 minutes total with both headphones (combined time) but my judgements:

Anyways, its pretty much as everyone described online, the K701 is much much more detailed, however it did not ruin the music for me or sound "plastic" or synthetic too much. To me it sounded very natural however the sound was very close to being "too detailed". But.. for what I was listening to, it seemed very appropriate. The lower register twang of the double-bass and piano was honestly one of the most amazing things i've heard. I'm also planning on buying these now based on my quick session with the headphones. They're unfortunately only going to be paired with a Meier Audio Corda 3move (I will sometime in the future get some more respectable gear, i'm just a poor student right now :P).

Anyways, my conclusion, AKG K701 yes, IS very detailed but it did NOT spoil the music for me. The bass was also sufficient enough for my liking (me, being someone who previously liked/likes trance, drum n bass, some hip hop). If you want bass, the Sennheiser provided a warmer and more powerful bass that would be more suited to bass-heavy music that does not rely on details much. I felt that the HD650s were almost a little muddy compared to the AKGs in all ranges. The AKGs provided much more solid feeling highs, mids and lows. I feel the AKGs would most probably be more suited to non-synthetic/electronically processed music. (this includes distorted guitars)

:) I'll post a full review of the AKGs once they've hit 100 hours of burn-in after I get them (provided my exam results let me get them :c). and then an update after another 50 :p

Ultimate Connectivity

Warning: Geekiness ahead
I've finally done something I've always wanted to do!! I have my iPod Touch, Gmail, Thunderbird (email client) & Mobile Phone all synced in terms of contacts and calendars (not quite calendar on my phone yet).

Its horribly geeky I know but at least I know I have everyone everywhere all the time :o (I don't exactly have a COMPLETE list of contacts yet but hey :p)

Study

I'm just on the train and i'm pretty bored :p

Anyways, study is actually... You know, paying off. I actually dont know how i would've gotten through this trimester if i didn't meet daniel, chirag, kumu, niroshi and dillshan! I've never EVER been this motivated to study lol. Doesn't help that i slacked during the trimester though :(.

Exams are almost over!

I also asked someone out on a date to a partial success :p, unsure if its out of niceness or whatnot but i'm having lunch with her sometime :O. She's cute and good to talk to soo we'll see what happens!

This holiday i'm planning on making some dnb but i'm not too sure where to start, I'll just start making sounds and build from there... :p

Also i'm going to build a portable headphone amp so hopefully I'll be able to get some sexy audio quality from my ipod! Its listenable... But, when you can have better, why not :p. I dont have the best headphones in the world (Sennheiser HD555 and CX400 mk2) but it'll make a difference :O. Only thing that'll annoy me is having to carry around batteries :(. Maybe i can make it charge via usb?

I'll post results from both musical ventures when they're done :)

The sound

Okay so... I've been MASSIVELY addicted to the song DotA by Basshunter after finding out the English translation isn't "All I Ever Wanted". Its about the game DotA, the ultimately nerdy one which i tried getting into and failed because i'm obviously not nerdy enough :( (it was fun while it lasted :p).

Anyways, onto more pressing issues. I've started liking someone new! (alongside the old D: .. which is bad!). Well, I cant say anything about her other than she's cute :p and she most probably doesn't know I do, she may've suspected something butttt... dont think so! I'll see if I can get her to notice me maybe :p

Anyways, I'm in a better mood, however... I probably should be stressing more due to my exam next Friday. We'll see!

Growing Up (and all that jazz)

So, i was at my friend's place today and well, she was complaining about all the things she was being restricted about or forced to go out of her way to accommodate for others. I was kinda thinking that was possibly a bit whiney then i realised that thats what i was like when i was living at home. This was also just over a year ago. Things change quickly apparently! :O :p

ps. she gave me a haircut and it got complimented on lol, however... im not sure if she was sarcastic :P
